How does my vehicle know that I’m about to leave my lane? And how does it know when it is raining? Learn more about ADAS, ADAS calibration, and where you can have your ADAS-equipped vehicle serviced below.
About ADAS
Modern vehicles are increasingly coming equipped with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). What does this mean? It’s an umbrella term for many of the features in today’s ‘smart’ vehicles. These features include:
- GPS
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
- Forward Automatic Emergency Braking (FAEB)
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
- Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA)
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
If you recognize any of the above terms, you have a smart vehicle with ADAS!
How Does ADAS Work?
ADAS works through a camera and set of sensors that is fitted to the center of the windshield, usually behind the rear-view mirror. The camera then relays important information about the conditions of the road ahead to the vehicle’s ADAS. This location also generally houses the windshield rain sensor.
It is important that the camera is calibrated to offer the best possible surveillance of the vehicle and the road ahead because these cameras are very precise. Often if your automatic windshield wipers aren’t working correctly, or your forward collision warning is causing you problems, this is a reason why. ADAS needs to receive accurate and reliable information to keep you and your vehicle up to date.
ADAS Calibration
The ADAS cameras and sensors sit behind the windshield, so they need to be re-calibrated when a new windshield is put in. If your vehicle has ADAS, you must bring it to a shop that has the proper machine and technicians to ensure that the system is calibrated.
The good news? Here at Splashes we now have a Camera Calibration Machine! Our fully licensed and experience technicians will ensure that your vehicle is properly calibrated to keep you safe.
