Update: We were able to donate $1,295 to the Surrey Women’s Centre for May – thanks for your support!

Since Mother’s Day falls in May, we thought it would be fitting to select a women’s centered charity for our Community Wash Partner of the Month. Given the current state of the world and the fact that many are having to isolate and quarantine at home, this brings about new challenges for women and children who may also be at risk for domestic violence. The Surrey Women’s Centre provides a safe place for women to begin their healing process – it is the first and sometimes the only place victims may call for help. They offer a range of crisis, court and counselling services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and other forms of gender-based violence. Their services provide the necessary tools to empower women and girls to build a future free from violence. According to their website, 1 woman is killed every 6 days in Canada by her intimate partner.

Please read the Executive Director’s statement below regarding COVID-19 and how it is affecting women in our community:

“In light of the recent coronavirus crisis, (Covid-19), and the declaration of a state of emergency in BC, we face the alarming reality of fear, isolation and distance. At this crucial time it is important that we prioritize everyone’s safety and ways to stay connected with each other.

Amidst the crisis of the pandemic of coronavirus, we cannot dismiss the global pandemic of violence against women. To self-isolate or quarantine are not the safest choice for women who are at risk of violence in their own homes. Vulnerable and homeless women are not able to quarantine. Home is often the prime location for harassment, violence and lethality for those at risk of gender-based violence. Surrey Women’s Centre will be especially vigilant to address the needs of our clients who are at highest risk…
