$8,306.10 Raised For Life For Lucy

Sunday, July 19 we held a fundraiser for Life for Lucy – a Vancouver baby who was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1. Check out our original post about the event here. We gave away free car washes with donation, and our customers came out to support Lucy in a major way!

With your generous donations, we were able to raise $8,306.10 – 100% of which went to Lucy! We have to extend major thanks as well to Tacofino who came out and served food at the event – we know this was a major draw for many who showed up on Sunday.

Several times throughout the day our lineup was all the way out to King George, but our amazing car wash staff prepped vehicles and worked cars through the wash with great efficiency (226 cars in total for the day)! Not only that – the staff donated their tips for the day back to Lucy. We got to meet so many great people – those of you that brought your newspaper clippings of Lucy’s story along with your donations, those of you that know the family, those of you that don’t, those of you that showed up just to get a wash not even knowing we were holding a fundraiser – who opened your wallets after hearing Lucy’s story. We received notes for Lucy’s family, messages of support and hope. We saw the best of White Rock and South Surrey on Sunday – and we can’t thank you enough!

The highlight of the event was of course, Lucy herself. Lucy and her family (Parents Scott and Laura, and older brother Sullivan) made an appearance and took the time to enjoy a taco and meet some of our staff and customers.

As of the publishing of this blog post, the Van Doormaal family has raised over $2.25m of the $3 million goal. You can visit the families GoFundMe page HERE to see the current progress of the fundraiser (as well as make a donation if you didn’t have the chance at our event)! The family is also posting updates on Lucy’s progress and their road to receiving this life-saving drug once the funds are raised. Getting the funds is just the beginning – Lucy has a long road ahead but will be given a better chance at life due to the generosity of so many. Hopefully, her getting the treatment will also lead to the drug being approved in Canada, so other children like Lucy can receive the treatment without having to raise $3 million.

Overall, all of us here at Splashes think the event was a smashing success, and we're amazed by the generosity of our community. During a year that has turned out to be so perilous, it was uplifting for all of us to see that there are still people looking to help one another. Thanks again to everyone who came out and supported Lucy.

A huge thanks again to the following members of our local business community for making this fundraiser possible:

  • Jade Brittany (@jadebrittanyblog) for additional awareness, support and promotion of the event
  • Chem Tec West for providing the wash chemicals for the day
  • Ocean Park Ford for providing the space for TACOFINO to park
  • TACOFINO for parking on-site and donating a portion of their proceeds to Life for Lucy
  • LaneSafe for providing traffic cones for the day
  • Peace Arch News who featured our event in their newspaper
  • Jack 96.9 Vancouver for helping spread the word about our event

Lucy and her family say thank you too!
